Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa is situated in the heart of the desert and nestles peacefully among the dunes on the outskirts of Dubai. The hotel was designed with 115 rooms and related facilities of restaurants, desert camp - a traditional outside restaurant, swimming pools, bars and a spa. Its design is that of a traditional Arabic village with courtyards, narrow streets and alleyways, covered passages and falaj’s that provide a unique ambience in a secluded area.
Ornamentation has been kept to a minimum, with the use of timber being restricted to pergolas and chandral poles on the facades. A rough self-coloured render has been used for the exterior facades, which picks up the colours and textures of the surrounding desert. Thick walls and relatively small openings help with the thermal efficiency of the design, as do the narrow streets and alleys which run between the two storey buildings, ensuring maximum overshadowing.
The golf clubhouse was designed to reflect a modern interpretation of a traditional dhow in full sail capturing the essence of Dubai's seafaring traditions and the majesty and simplicity of the lateen-rigged dhows as they sailed up and down the coastline of Dubai.
